Cialis, generically known as tadalafil, is one of the most well-known drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction. Cialis works by relaxing the muscles within blood vessels, allowing for increased blow flow to areas of the body. When used to treat erectile dysfunction, Cialis has a very high rate of success; however, it must be noted that as is the case with all types of prescription drugs, in some cases side effects do occur.

Cialis can also be used daily as a treatment for an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. Symptoms of BPH include difficulty in starting the flow of urine, a weak stream, and frequent urination especially during the night. Before taking Cialis it is important to be aware of all possible Cialis side effects and potential interactions with other substances.

Before Taking Cialis – What You Should Know

Before taking Cialis, first and foremost a doctor should be consulted. During an initial doctor visit it can be determined if there are any allergies to tadalafil. If an allergy is discovered, an alternative treatment will be recommended. The initial doctor’s visit will also help to determine if any other medications will respond to taking Cialis. Medication that is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension does not interact well with Cialis and they should not be used simultaneously. Additionally, any nitrate drugs for chest pain or other heart problems mean that Cialis treatment is a non-starter. Nitrate based medications include nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide mononitrate. The most important takeaway is that Cialis should not be taken with any nitrate medication, as the combination can cause a sudden and severe drop in blood pressure.

To ensure that Cialis is a safe treatment, it is important to inform a doctor of the following medical conditions and situations:

  • heart rhythm problems
  • heart disease
  • a heart attack in the last three months
  • a stroke in the past year
  • chest pain or angina
  • blood pressure issues, both irregularly high or low
  • blood disorders, including sickle cell anemia and leukemia
  • a history of stomach ulcers
  • liver or kidney disease
  • any other health related issues that prohibit intercourse

Once prescribed Cialis, prescription directions should be followed with no alterations. Cialis does not need to be taken with food, and it is recommended that tablets are not broken or split. If taking Cialis to treat erectile dysfunction, the proper dose should be taken before sexual activity, but never more than once in 24 hours. It is recommended to store Cialis at room temperature, safe from moisture or extreme heat.

Common Cialis Side Effects

As is the case with the overwhelming majority of prescription drugs, side effects are common. Common Cialis side effects do not require medical attention and often dissipate on their own. Headaches are the most common Cialis side effect, especially during initial use of the drug. A Cialis induced headache is no different than a run of the mill headache and should be treated accordingly. Another common side effect of Cialis is sore throat or sinus pain and pressure. Again, a medical treatment is not needed if these common side effects are experienced, but do take note and inform a doctor is the sinus pain and/or sore throat do not improve. The last common Cialis side effect is acute muscle pain. This common side effect can be hard to pin down, as the exact cause of the muscle pain can be attributed to many different actions, bodily movements, and other medications. If muscle pain worsens considerably after taking Cialis, inform a medical professional.

Less Common Cialis Side Effects

There are a number of far less common Cialis side effects, occurring in less than 2% of regular Cialis users. Very uncommon Cialis side effects that require immediate or emergency medical attention include:

  • an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours
  • an erection that is abnormally painful
  • loss of vision after taking Cialis
  • other vision changes, as Cialis can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve
  • symptoms normally associated with a heart attack, e.g. chest pain that spreads to the jaw or shoulder

Other less common Cialis side effects that warrant a call to a doctor or medical professional include:

  • ringing in the ears
  • sudden complete hearing loss
  • irregular heartbeat
  • extreme swelling of the hands, ankles or feet
  • difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • convulsions or seizure-like activity
  • extreme light-headed feelings to the point of losing consciousness

It is possible that other side effects of Cialis exist. Any medical changes that occur after taking Cialis should be taken seriously, and warrant seeing a medical professional.

Cialis and Alcohol

Caution should be taken when taking Cialis and using alcohol. A common side effect of tadalafil is to lower blood pressure, an effect that can be further increased by alcohol. The interaction of the two substances resulting in low blood pressure can lead to dizziness, feeling light-headed, and possibly even fainting. It is recommended that alcohol be avoided completely when Cialis is prescribed, and at the very least, its use should be carefully limited.

Interaction With Other Drugs

As mentioned previously, use of any nitrate medication while taking Cialis is dangerous and should be forbidden by any medical professional. It is recommended that at least two full days (48 hours) should pass after taking Cialis and then taking a nitrate medication. Even if the full 48-hour buffer period is observed, administration of the nitrate medication should be under the close care of a medical professional.

Alpha-blockers are another class of medicine that should not be taken while using Cialis. Both medicines are considered vasodilators, meaning they lower blood pressure. Use of multiple vasodilators can actually result in a dangerous effect that causes blood pressure to go much lower than normal levels.

Even over the counter substances such as antacids and antifungals can interact with Cialis. Antacids, for instance, affect the rate at which the body can absorb Cialis, limiting the drug’s effectiveness. Antifungal medications on the other hand can have an effect on how long it takes Cialis to exit the body.

Note that Cialis should not be used in tandem with any other erectile dysfunction medications including Viagra (sildenafil) or Levitra (vardenafil). Many of the side effects mentioned above are amplified when taking Cialis with a similar erectile dysfunction medication.

When used to treat erectile dysfunction and symptoms of BPH, Cialis (generically known as tadalafil) has proven to be a very effective medication. As is the case with the overwhelming majority of medication, Cialis does have some common, minor side effects. Other more serious side effects do occur in a very small percentage of Cialis users. It is important to disclose all medical conditions to a doctor before taking Cialis. Additionally, all medications and supplements should be disclosed to a doctor before starting use of Cialis as drug interactions can happen. Alcohol should be avoided when using Cialis. Any changes after starting Cialis should be taken seriously, and if conditions do not improve, they should be reported to a medical professional. Overall, if used correctly, Cialis is a highly effective medication that can improve quality of life for many.
